As we close out another year at D R Newitt, we sat down with Callum Welsh to reflect on his first year with the company. From his passion for sales to his unique hobbies, Callum gives us an insightful look into his journey so far. In this interview, he shares his experiences, challenges, and personal highlights, offering a fresh perspective on life at D R Newitt. Read on to hear from Callum about his growth, his team, and what keeps him motivated in his role.
-How do you think your year has gone?
"My first year has been enjoyable, and I’ve learned so much. I’ve embraced the idea that every day is a school day. I feel like I’ve become more knowledgeable and ingrained myself in my speciality—sales. It’s been a rewarding experience, and I’m excited to continue developing."
-How’s your team?
"My team is fantastic, it’s a great mix of experience and different ages, and we work really collaboratively. We work hard but also know how to have fun. And I’ve got to mention it—there’s always a good supply of snacks to keep us going!"
-What’s your biggest weakness?
"My biggest weakness? Well, it’s probably my inability to grow hair!”
-How do you find recruiting in the commercial department?
"I find recruiting in commercial really interesting. There’s such a range of specialisms, companies, and products to work with. Every day brings something new, and what I enjoy most is working with incredibly different and capable individuals. It’s always rewarding to see what people bring to the table."
The most challenging thing about your job?
"Recruitment definitely has its challenges, and it can be tough at times. But when the wins come, they really make up for the difficult moments. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of helping someone land a great role or solving a client’s needs. The wins always feel better than the losses."
-What’s a passion of yours?
"I’m passionate about bagpiping—something I’ve been doing for 15 years. I also really enjoy socialising and helping people. Whether it’s through my job or just in my personal life, there’s something so rewarding about making a positive impact on others."
-Favourite process to work on?
"My favourite process was the most recent one I worked on. I helped a candidate who hadn’t been employed for a few years, particularly due to the challenges of the pandemic. It was such a personal win for them and seeing them land a great role was incredibly rewarding. It felt like a real-life improvement for someone who truly deserved it."
-Where do you want to be in a year?
In a year’s time, I hope to be a Senior Recruitment Consultant here at D R Newitt, continuing successes and matching great candidates up with clients.
-Dream job as a kid?
"When I was younger, I dreamed of being a lottery winner—just enjoying life with no worries! As for how this job compares? Well, I’m definitely working on it!"
-Work pet peeve?
"I think my work pet peeve would have to be the poor music choices some people have in the office. “
-If you could get a gift from any client what would you love?
"If I could get any gift from a client, it would be a year’s supply of sushi. Honestly, I’d be more than happy with that!"
